Case Study: Parrs Wood High School

We have been delivering handball as part of the school curriculum for the past six years. The catalyst was when a number of our PE staff attended the Manchester PE conference where handball was a ‘taster sport’ for the day. The staff attending enjoyed playing the sport so much. They also recognised handball’s potential to engage a lot of pupils due to its simplicity (rules & equipment), and it was added at Key stages three and four.  That same year saw the under-13 girls crowned National Schools Champions!

Since then we have set up a community handball club in partnership with Mancunians rugby and handball club. The partnership provides training and competitive opportunities for over 50 pupils.  We have a fully integrated pathway in place. This includes:

  • hosting primary school tournaments run by our older handball leaders
  • access to county and regional structures at the elite level – we even have a pupil who now plays for Great Britain Under 18′s!

We have a very strong ethos of pupil-leading-pupil at the school.  We offer training, support and guidance for our young leaders – and provide quality mentoring that helps them to reflect on, and improve, their performance.  This ethos also helps create strong role models within the school.

The Girls 4 Gold course fitted in perfectly with our structure and outlook.  The girls who attended were a good mix of:

  • handballers
  • non-handballers
  • good existing leaders
  • those who had not led a group before.

Our tutor Jess got just the right balance. She engaged those with handball-specific strengths and those with leadership strengths to bring out the best in them all.  After lunch, the group were put to the ultimate test. They had to deliver a short skills session to a group of year-6 children who were visiting the school on their transition day.  This gave the girls the opportunity to be in a real, but controlled, environment to test out their planned session.  It also gave them the chance to reflect on how well their session went and how they could improve it.  The quote of the day came from a year-10 girl who said: “wow, I didn’t realise how much you have to think when planning a session.”

The following week, we hosted a primary school handball tournament.  The girls that attended the Girls 4 Gold course helped run the tournament, applying the skills they had learned.  The younger pupils responded really well to the girls, which helped further develop their confidence. They have already been asking if they can organise their own year 5 and year 6 tournament in September, which is great!

The girls who play handball regularly for the club, have started making plans to run an under 12s section (including delivering ‘taster’ sessions and promoting it in the local primary schools). The impact of the course has the potential to be huge on the number of younger children playing handball.
