Anglo-Welsh rivalry in the Men's National Shield

In the England Handball Men’s National Shield, South Wales travel to Guildford in the opening match of the weekend. Guildford are third in Regional League South East A and the Welsh team sit in the middle of the Regional League South West. South Wales beat Stroud to get this far, with Guildford seeing off the University of Loughborough II. Throw off is at 13.30 in Charterhouse Club, Guildford, on Saturday.

The first of Sunday’s two matches sees Essex travel to the University of Loughborough in a match staged in the Sir David Wallace Sports Hall on the university campus. Throw off is at 4pm, and both teams came through the previous round by a margin of ten goals: Essex beating Deva, and the students seeing off Poole Phoenix.

The third match of the weekend sees Coventry Sharks host the University of Bath in Coventry Leisure Centre. The Sharks are unbeaten so far this season and sit top of the National Handball League North, and will fancy their chances against the students who have only recorded one win from three in the Regional League South West this season. Coventry held Medway to 10-0 in the previous round. Throw off is at 18.00.

The final National Shield match in this round will be staged the following weekend, when Reading Lions will travel to Newcastle Vikings in a Saturday match at Temple Park. This promises to be a close match as both teams have a point to prove this season, with the Vikings lacking a league win so far and the Lions with only one to their name. Throw off is at 12.30.
