North East schools finalist decided

The North East Handball Schools Games took place at South Shields’ Temple Park Leisure Centre.

In the under-13 competition South Shields’ St. Wilfrid’s RC College won the girl’s cup. They defeated Ponteland’s Richard Coates Middle School 2-1 and Chester-le-Street’s Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy 3-0.  The two defeated sides drew 2-2, with Richard Coates Middle School taking the runners-up spot on goals scored.

The Under-13 boy’s competition was ultimately won by Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy. The title was decided on goals scored after each of the three teams won one and lost one.  Wallsend’s Churchill Community College beat Richard Coates Middle School 2-1. Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy defeated Churchill Community College 4-0. Richard Coates Middle School then won 3-2 over Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy.

Washington’s Oxclose Community Academy won the under-15 boy’s cup with an extra-time 3-2 victory over Newcastle’s Gosforth Academy. A last-minute equaliser by Gosforth had levelled the scores 2-2 at the end of normal time.

The girl’s under-15 competition saw Gosforth Academy claim the title unchallenged after Washington’s Biddick Academy were unable to make the day.

The winning schools will go on to represent the North East region at the Eng Scland Handball Schools Handball Finals on 10 and 11 June at Worcester University.
