England take on Scotland when London GD play Livingston in a highly anticipated European Handball Federation (EHF) Men’s Challenge Cup second-round match in October.
The match, being dubbed the ‘Battle of Britain’, will be the first meeting between and English and Scottish club in European Handball competition.
The two teams met in the British Championships in May 2018. Livingston narrowly defeated Premier Handball League champions and England Handball National Cup winners GD 29-26 in the semi-final. The Scottish club then lost to Glasgow in the final.
The home and away matches will be played on 13/14 October at Medway Park in Gillingham, Kent. GD plan to make this a family event, with handball and additional entertainment thanks to the involvement of local community sport clubs and great support from Medway Council.
Miguel Puig, head coach of GD, says facing Livingston’s young team will be very tough - but they will do all they can to progress to the third round of the EHF Challenge Cup. He said: “Our Euro-opponents Livingston HC will surely make things difficult for us as demonstrated in Edinburgh last May. There is no doubt they are one of the best British handball teams at the moment. Their fast game and quality young players are the main assets of the Scottish squad.”
Puig points out that London GD have their own challenges, but they will continue to aim high. He added: “A couple of long-term injuries, several leavers and a change of head coach won’t make our aspirations lower. London GD will aim to win every national competition again and go as far as possible in the European Challenge Cup.”
The other English club in action in the competition is East-London based Olympia, who play both home and away games against club Pallamano Pressano in Italy.
