Eagles grab Under-16 boys title after extra time

After a frenetic game where both teams refused to give an inch, West London Eagles took the Under-16 boys title with a 22-21 victory over Warrington Wolves after the match went to extra time.

The teams traded goals throughout the first half, Wolves going in at the break just in front 10-9.

The second half continued in the same vein as the first, with fast-paced end to end action. Both goalkeepers pulled off stunning saves and each goal was greeted with raucous celebrations by supporters.

With 30 seconds to go in normal time and the scoreboard at 17 goals apiece, Eagles had possession but had a shot saved as the buzzer went to signify time.

Wolves scored twice in the first period of extra time as the teams turned around with the score 19-17. Eagles drew back in the second period to take the score to 20-19 to Wolves, then scored a penalty to make it 20-20 with 90 seconds remaining. Both teams netted once more before Eagles got their noses in front with 30 seconds left on the clock with two goals from fast breaks.

The time had gone dead with Wolves in possession and awarded a free throw. Had they scored, the match would have gone to a penalty shootout but the ball hit the netting behind the goal and Eagles could celebrate their win.

After the final whistle, Eagles coach Alexander Djelic described it as “a very, very tough match. Both teams played very well. Our idea was to close down their left and right backs as much as possible because they are the two main players for their team. Our defence was resilient in that respect and we made things happen.”

Eagles captain Miles Gannon “we had a good team, carrying each other, trying to win every single tackle. We learned from this game that we need more training, because there was some areas we were really poor. But we know we’re a resilient team and we never give up. Next year we want to continue!”

Top scorer for Wolves was Sam Dowling with seven. Tomas Dos Santos Moniz also netted seven times, for Eagles.
