Ealing recently became the first borough to ever to win double gold at the London Youth Games, with both their girl’s and boy’s teams winning the competition.
The success added to the girl’s gold in 2017 and the boy’s win in 2016 – taking Ealing’s tally to four gold and two bronze since 2013.
Both of this year’s squads were made up of around 60% of regular under-16 players from Ealing Handball club, and 40% of brand new players from local schools.
The squad to represent the borough of Ealing started its preparation in March. After successful trials the selected players trained consistently with Mel Chowns, Joe Vickers, Marc Fayemi and former Ealing young players who started their handball journey playing at the Games - namely Razvan Mihaila and Simon Urbutis. In addition Radek Kozaczuk always made himself available to provide dedicated goalkeeper training.
The boys played knowing that the girls won the day before. It was a great source of motivation.
The golds at the London Youth Games capped a memorable season for Ealing Handball club who were named ‘Best Junior Sport Club’ at the 2017 Ealing Sports Awards, and saw the under-16 girls reach the national league finals.
Melanie Chowns, girl’s head coach, said: "It was great to see the more experienced players helping the new ones"
Marc Fayemi, boy’s head coach, said: "The competition was a great opportunity for new players to discover our great sport and join a club in the coming season."
