England Handball Womens' National Cup: Sharks begin Cup defence with Angels win

Coventry Sharks began the defence of their England Handball Womens’ National Cup title with victory over London Angels, while Cambridge were giant-killing victims of London GD II.

London GD continued their 100% record this season, winning against Olympia. West London Eagles were run close by Reading, Peninsula edged past Liverpool, NEM Hawks were given a test by University of Loughborough, and University of Bath beat Poole Phoenix.

Sharks led 11-4 at half time against fellow Womens’ Premier Handball League side Angels. They extended their advantage by a further goal as it finished 22-13 in Sharks’ favour. Kristin Ivancheva top scored in the match with eight goals, while Nora Sandor struck six times for Angels.

Coventry will play NEM Hawks in the quarter finals after the North-west side beat University of Loughborough 19-14. A low-scoring first half saw Hawks hold a narrow 6-4 lead, before extending that advantage after the break. Lydia Edgar beat the keeper five time for Hawks to lead the scoring charts in the match.

Womens' South East Regional League Tier 1 side London GD II kept their excellent run going as they overcame Womens’ Premier Handball League side Cambridge 18-16. They now await the winner of Bristol and Manchester to see who will be their last-eight opponents.

London GD were 29-14 winners in an all Womens’ Premier Handball League tie at Olympia. Christina Rehnberg led the way for GD with eight goals, while Nikola Szymora beat the keeper six times. Camila Grasso scored four times for 2016 Cup victors Olympia.

GD will play West London Eagles in the quarters after Eagles won a close-fought match against Reading Lionesses 26-24. Eagles led 13-11 as the two sides went into half time, and held their narrow advantage through to full time. Noelly Chevalier bagged 10 goals for Eagles, and Sunniva Osvtebo Naess scored eight times. Emese Mozes-Racz scored seven goals for Reading.

Peninsula hosted Liverpool in a local derby, running out 22-20 winners in a thrilling match. Womens’ Premier Handball League side Peninsula trailed 6-8 at half time against their Womens’ North Regional League opponents. However, they fought back in the second period to take victory. Laura Black and Gabrielle Howarth both scored five times for Peninsula, while Liverpool’s Brooke Partington also found the back of the net five times.

Peninsula’s quarter-final opponents will be University of Bath after they beat Poole Phoenix 22-16.
