NEM Hawks have praised the help they have received from Oldham Sports Development and Oldham Community Leisure, after winning the Sports Club of the Year gong at Oldham Sports Awards.
Head Coach Donna Hankinson said: “We wouldn’t have continued to grow without it.
“A lot of the children at the club come from the Oldham Schools and the surrounding boroughs, and we would never have grown without their input and support.”
“From humble beginnings Hawks are firmly on the handball map.”
Coach, and club co-founder, Susan Whitehead added: “Six years ago four people had a vision of introducing handball to young people disenfranchised from other sports, such as football and netball.”
Hawks success at the Oldham Sports Awards sees them go through to the Greater Manchester Awards in the Autumn. Donna added: “I hope we do handball and Oldham Sports Development proud.”
In their first year Hawks were crowned girl’s under-18 National Champions. The following year (2012) both the boy’s and the girl’s team won the title – a feat they repeated this year.
Hawks Super 8 men’s and women’s team are made up mainly of their first group of junior players. They also provided 14 players for the home based GB women’s development squad.
