England Handball has announced that NEM Hawks will play in the England Handball National Mens' Cup final after Islington were disqualified for fielding ineligible players.
The decision was made following an investigation and ruling by the England Handball Competitions Disciplinary Committee.
Hawks played Islington in the semi-final, where they were narrowly defeated 25-28 but will now go forward to play London GD in the final.
Hawks coach Donna Hankinson said the club were “shocked” at the announcement.
She commented: “As a club we were devastated to lose against Islington and without doubt on the day the club lost fair and square.
“However, to now be offered this opportunity fills the staff and players with a sense of excitement, especially with the way we lost the final last year. We failed to show the handball family our fast and dynamic handball playing style and this time we are determined to show everyone what our young squad is capable of.”
Turning her attention to the National Cup final, at Derby Arena on Sunday 6 May, Hankinson relishes the challenge of current Mens' Premier Handball League leaders GD.
She added: “We have lost two times in the league this season to London GD but both games have been tight.
“The beauty of the final for the public is their experience versus our speed and exuberance. If the other matches we have played are anything to go by it promises to be an exciting match for the paying public. Roll on 6 May!”
