Coventry Sharks will face 2019 finalists Cambridge in the second round of the England Handball Men’s National Cup after beating perennial giantkillers Oxford University.
Islington and Northampton also booked their places in the second round with wins against Chelsea II and London GD II, respectively.
Sharks will have gone into the match knowing Oxford’s recent record for knocking out teams in leagues above them in the cup. It looked as though Oxford could be claiming another scalp when they led 11-9 at half time. However, National League North side Sharks hit back to win 23-18. Artis Batalovs and Mathias Rigaud both scored five goals for Sharks. For Oxford Fabian Krusa and Pavel Cristian Labunt also beat the keeper five times.
Islington will play 2018 winners London GD in the second round following a 33-24 victory over Chelsea II. Islington edged a close first half 14-13, before pulling away after the break. Leonel Silva and Joao Cauvalho both found the back of the net four times. Anthanosios Grammatikopalos scored three times for Chelsea.
Northampton beat London GD II 33-26, building on a five goal 20-15 advantage at half time. Ahmed Chibane scored an impressive 15 goals for Northampton. Roger Kuhn bagged seven goals for GD II. Northampton take on West London Eagles in the second round.
