Men's Premier Handball League: Hawks beat GD to go top

NEM Hawks went top of the Men’s Premier Handball League with victory over London GD in the battle of the top two.

Nottingham moved second after beating Olympia, West London Eagles secured their first maximum points of the season with a win over Cambridge, while Warrington Wolves overcame the challenge of Carshalton Titans.

Hawks won 23-20 against GD at Oldham Leisure Centre. GD held a slender 12-11 lead at the break. Hawks turned the tables in the second half, helped by eight goals in the match by Harry Morley, and six strikes by Jake Williams. Silviu Hapenciuc top scored for GD, beating the keeper six times. Hawks sit top on 21 points. GD drop to third with 19 points.

Nottingham returned to winning ways with a 31-27 victory at home to Olympia after leading 13-11 at half time. Francisco Pereira again led the scoring for Nottingham with 11 goals. Dawid Chodyra and Georgiev Veselin top scored for the visitors with six goals apiece. Nottingham have 20 points. Olympia, in fourth, are on 16 points.

West London Eagles beat Cambridge 30-22 to win their first match of the campaign. Eagles held a 15-8 advantage at the break. They extended their lead by a further goal in a tighter second period. Fabio Goutet found the back of the net an impressive 16 times for Eagles. Alejandro Garcia Costa scored 10 for Cambridge. West London Eagles move onto 11 points, but stay bottom after Wolves beat Titans. Cambridge in fifth have 15 points.

Warrington won 27-25 at Carshalton to notch up their second success of the season. Wolves led 14-10 at half time. Titans edged the second half but were unable to close the gap. Aaron Bradley-Shankar of Wolves, and Adam Latter of Titans were joint top scorers in the game with six goals apiece. Wolves stay in seventh spot, but move to within two points of Carshalton in sixth, who have 14 points.
