Men's Premier Handball League: Nottingham win against leaders GD

Nottingham beat defending Men’s Premier Handball League champions London GD in a thriller, while Olympia were held to a draw by NEM Hawks.

Warrington Wolves got their season into gear with victory over West London Eagles, and Carshalton Titans beat Cambridge.

Nottingham won 27-28 in a real nail-biter. The teams couldn’t be separated at half time with the scores tied at 15-15. However, visitors Nottingham did enough in the second period to take maximum points, helped by 10 goals from Francisco Pereira, and nine strikes by Benjamin Howard. William Moore bagged nine goals for GD. Nottingham sit in third, behind GD on goal difference.

NEM Hawks returned from the Capital with two points after the match finished 24-24. Olympia held a three-goal lead at the break with the score at 13-10. However, Hawks clawed back that advantage to ensure it finished all square. Harry Morley of Hawks, and Olympia’s Kleyton Lopez heading the scoring charts with seven goals apiece. Despite the draw Olympia move top, while Hawks are fifth.

Wolves put the disappointment of defeats in their first two matches to beat fellow strugglers West London Eagles 38-21. Wolves went into half time with a healthy 20-9 lead, before also enjoying the better of the second half. Despite being on the losing side Eagles’ Cian Baxter headed the scoring charts with 10 goals. Jacob Maxted and Reuben Wardle both found the back of the net six times for Wolves.  Wolves move up to sixth, ahead of Cambridge on goal difference. Eagles are bottom, still searching for their first win of the season.

Carshalton are fourth after claiming their second win of the campaign. The promoted side beat Cambridge 35-33 in another close match. Home-side Cambridge held a slender 17-16 lead at half time. However, Titans turned the tables in the second half to secure victory. Alberto Lucasn scored eight times for Cambridge, while the game’s top scorer was Titans’ Tyler Gilborn with nine goals.
