Mens' Premier Handball League: Wolves beat Nottingham to stay top

Warrington Wolves remain top of the Men’s Premier Handball League after narrowly beating Nottingham in a top-of-the-table clash.

Olympia sit behind them on goal difference following victory over West London Eagles, while NEM Hawks and London GD drew, and Brighton lost to Cambridge.

Wolves edged past Nottingham 27-26 at Derby Arena. Maciej Walczak top scored for Wolves with six strikes, while Sebi Hesk and Ryan Thomas weighed in with five goals. Least season’s Male Player-of-the-Season Francisco Pereira top scored in the game, finding the back of the net eight times for Nottingham, who drop from second to fourth.

Olympia join Warrington as the only team with a 100% record after two rounds after beating West London Eagles 24-20 at Leyton Score Centre. Olympia, for whom Tomasz Chwajta led the scoring with seven goals, led 13-6 at the break. Eagles reduced Olympia’s advantage in the second half but couldn’t close the gap as their London rivals took maximum points. Eagles Lucas Carstens also netted seven times.

Eagles are seventh in the table, ahead of new boys Brighton on goal difference. Seahawks lost heavily against Wolves in their first match in the Premier Handball League, but pushed Cambridge harder as the match finished 25-23 to the East Anglian side. Alejandro Garcia Costa ran in eight goals for Cambridge, while Brighton’s Sam Crocker scored five times for Brighton. The win puts Cambridge in fifth.

In Oldham NEM Hawks played out a thriller with defending champions London GD as the match finished 29-29. Hawks held a slender 14-13 advantage at half time, with GD having just the better of the second half. Hawks shared the scoring around with Stefan Whaley, Carl Barnes, Charlie Fletcher and Harry Morley all grabbing five goals. Alexander Rauner scored nine goals for GD. Hawks are third and GD lie in sixth.
