Two of the top handball teams in the capital face off in The Score Centre, Leyton, on Saturday afternoon in a double-header. The women go first, at 14.30, with the men to follow at 16.30.
This double Premier Handball League showdown is anticipated to be a tighter affair in the women’s match, where the two teams sit adjacent in the table in third and fourth. Eagles currently sit five points ahead of their London rivals with a game in hand, steered by their new coach Paul Dempsey who only started with the club at the beginning of this season. Dempsey has played for Great Britain as well as professionally in Europe. Eagles have only lost one game this season, against league leaders London GD way back in September.
Olympia are having a strong second half of the season and only lost to NEM Hawks, second in the league, by two goals in their last outing. The previous match between these two London sides saw Eagles take the honours by three goals. Olympia will be hoping to reverse this result and make up the deficit on the top three in the women’s league.
It’s an opportunity for a whole afternoon of top flight handball with the men throwing off at 16.30. In the men’s match, Olympia are the slight favourites as the only unbeaten team in the league this season. They sit second in the league with seven wins and two draws against their name this season. Olympia’s previous match saw them draw with NEM Hawks, but with a game in hand and just three points behind leaders GD, they look threatening to grab that top spot during the next few rounds of fixtures.
Eagles sit second from bottom in the league, twelve points behind their London rivals and with only one victory this season. However, in January Eagles took league leaders London GD to a one goal margin of defeat, implying their season may be turning around with that strong performance albeit in defeat.
The form guide suggests it could be one win apiece by the time the dust settles on Saturday, but club honour is at stake so anything could happen.
