Both Reading Lions and the University of Loughborough have the opportunity to qualify both men’s and women’s teams for the finals of the England Handball Men’s National Shield, with semi-finals scheduled for this weekend. Loughborough face Guildford Sabres and Coventry Sharks play Reading Lions in the second semi-final.
Loughborough lost their quarter-final against Essex Hurricanes, but went through to the semi-final because Hurricanes had fielded ineligible players. Sabres will be full of confidence after their comfortable 36-24 quarter-final win over South Wales. Daniel Sullivan netted eight times for Sabres, so the team will be hoping he is available to play this weekend.
Throw-off is at 14.30 on Saturday at The Edge Leisure Centre, Haslemere, Surrey.
The second semi-final sees Reading Lions travel to Coventry Sport and Leisure Centre to face Sharks in a Saturday evening match.
Sharks are unbeaten in their league so far this season and sit on top of the National Handball League North, and overcame the University of Bath 40-32 in a high scoring game in the quarter-finals. Lions will travel to the Midlands with only one league win to their name this season, and a point to prove. Throw-off is at 18.30.
The National Shield final will be contested at Derby Arena as part of a weekend of handball national finals, on 5 and 6 May.
