2nd March 2019
May the Fourth be with you on Tyneside as Newcastle Vikings hold their end-of-season senior tournament, now in its seventh year.
The 4th May competition is a chance to renew cross-border rivalry as the event has had a Scottish flavour. Teams from over Hadrian’s Wall have won the men’s event every year. In the women’s competition, two of the six titles have headed back to Scotland.
Reigning men’s champions are East Kilbride’s EK82, and hosts Newcastle Vikings won last year’s women’s title. Glasgow have won the men’s event three times but missed last year’s tournament due to European commitments. The other previous Scottish winners have been Strathclyde University and Edinburgh. The previous women’s titles have been spread between Edinburgh, Vikings and Cranfield University.
The event began in 2013, soon after Newcastle Vikings was founded in 2012. 2017 saw Edinburgh do the double and win both men’s and women’s competitions.
This year the action is moving closer to the heart of the city with the tournament being held at the Benfield Centre for Sporting Excellence, just minutes from Walkergate metro station which has a direct line to the city centre. Entries are open until 31st March at £60 per team.
Spectator entry is free and there will be plenty of bleacher-style seating at the venue. Teams are invited to join Vikings for the post-tournament evening after-party in Newcastle city centre - this year held at club sponsors Kafeneon bar/restaurant.
