Northampton are the women’s National Shield champions after beating London GD II 27-20.
They led 15-9 at half-time and withstood a spirited GD fightback early in the second half to take the 2019 National Shield. Northampton add this to their trophy cabinet alongside the league title for the Women’s Regional League Midlands.
The Midlanders enjoyed a significant size advantage over the GD players and used this in their favour. Club co-founder Marta Podsiadlo says this was their plan, as the team took an immediate lead in the early part of the first half. “It went as we planned. We wanted to get the advantage straight away and use the advantage of the height of our players.”
Both teams took home their respective league titles, with GD II picking up the Regional League South East 1 trophy after a successful season.
Podsiadlo said GD II fought them all the way and the Northampton team were never able to relax. “The pressure was throughout the entire game – handball is such a quick game it changes the entire time so until the very last minute we were not sure whether we had it! We knew London GD work so hard and just don’t give up.
“Our aim was to make the National Shield final – but to win it was even better.”
Northampton will contest the play-off match next weekend against Cambridge to decide who will be promoted to the Premier Handball League.
