Olympia moved four points clear at the top of the Women’s Premier Handball League with a close-fought victory over Cambridge Angels.
West London Eagles drew with London GD to move up to second place.
Olympia beat Cambridge 30-27. They went into half time with a slender three-goal advantage and were made to work hard for maximum points in a second period where the teams couldn’t be split. Denisa Le Mon ran in an impressive 10 goals for Olympia, while Sara Antunes scored nine. Angels Get Morkvenaite equalled Le Mon’s achievement with 10 strikes of her own. Olympia have 13 points from their five games. Cambridge in third sit on nine points.
Eagles also have nine points after their 25-25 draw with GD, but have played a match less than Olympia and Cambridge. Eagles looked down and out as they trailed 11-18 at half time, but a spirited second-half performance saw them take a share of the spoils. Chiara Bolze hit seven goals for Eagles, while Tania Corti and Nikola Szymura both scored six times for GD. The results leaves GD in fourth spot, on eight points, just three ahead of bottom side NEM Hawks, who’ve played two games less.
